GUEST POST & GIVEAWAY: Rebecca Chastain, Author of A Fistful of Fire (@Author_Rebecca)

A Fistful of FireMadison Fox survived her first week as California’s newest illuminant enforcer, defending her region against imps, vervet, hounds, and one lascivious demon. If her grumpy boss, Mr. Pitt, was impressed, he hasn’t told Madison. In fact, there’s a lot her boss has been closemouthed about, including the dark secret haunting his past.

But Madison’s problems are just igniting. Neighboring regions report an uncharacteristic flare-up of evil, fire-breathing salamanders blaze unchecked across the city, and Black Friday looms. Trapped doing cleanup amid mobs of holiday shoppers, Madison watches from the sidelines as dubious allies insinuate themselves in her region.

As suspicions kindle and the mysterious evil gains strength, Madison must determine who she can trust—and whose rules to follow—before her region and career go up in flames.

Sizzling with adventure and sparking with magic, A Fistful of Fire is fused with Madison Fox’s trademark blend of humor and ass-kicking action.

Guest Post – Rules for Reading by Rebecca Chastain

I’m serious about reading, and I know you are, too. Like me, you have a TBR pile that’s constantly growing, you’re determined to never miss out on a good novel, and you have other demands on your time that prevent you from devoting endless glorious hours to reading. Since it’s very important for you to optimize your reading time while still savoring every page of your favorite authors’ novels, you know you’ve got to stick to the rules.

Wait? Have you been reading willy-nilly your whole life, completely oblivious to the rules? Then this is going to revolutionize your reading experience, and it possibly might change your life!

Pick a book based on the first sentence.

Your TBR piles are spreading in what your friends and family believe might be a hostile takeover of your home. You, in fact, endorse TBR’s expansion, and are sneaking it food whenever no one is looking. (“I swear, dear spouse of mine, the guest bathroom bathtub has always been full of books. They came with the house.”) However, as the great TBR creature bloats under your love and care, your ability to choose the next novel to read becomes exponentially more arduous. How do you pick one out of so many exciting options? This rule will save you from unnecessary anguish: Pick three to five books, then read the first line in each. Whichever book suits your current mood is the one to go with. Never decide your next book too far in advance; reading a good book when you’re not in the mood for it is a terrible injustice.

Read while you brush your teeth.

Don’t waste precious reading time. You brush your teeth an average of three minutes twice a day, right? That’s six minutes of empty time when one hand is completely free to hold a book. If you’ve got an eReader, you can also include flossing time (prop the eReader up, and voila, two hands are free). Just don’t stand too close to the screen.

Never read in bed.

(I felt a few of you gasp in horror, but hear me out.) The only books worth reading when your body is saying sleep would be the wiser option are incredibly exciting books. Which means reading in bed = staying up all night (or until the book is finished). If it’s the weekend or summer break (if you’re in school), you’re allowed the exception. Similarly, if you’re on vacation, this rule goes completely out the window. Or if the book won’t let go of your hand and the novel has transmuted you into a reading zombie unable to function without it, you must appease the novel and finish it before you’re allowed sleep. Otherwise, absolutely zero reading in bed is tolerated.

Never read more than two fiction books at once.

One of the most coveted experiences of a novel is getting to live in that special world. Too frequent world hopping between three or four fiction novels muddies your experience of all them. It’s a risk without reward. Avoid it at all costs. Unless, of course, you also have the option of listening to an audio book. Then feel free to have two books going at once, because what else are you going to do when you’re running on a treadmill?

Never read the same author back to back.

Phenomenal writers tug you into their worlds, and they don’t give you an opt-out option until the end of the novel. Take it, even if it means having a novel hangover for a few days (you know the feeling, when the real world seems far less important, colorful, and exciting than the literary world you just left behind). Reading the same author back to back (to back) changes the way you see the prose. The underpinnings of the author’s style become transparent, and your effortless absorption into the story can be tainted by seeing the mechanics of it at work. Break this rule at your own risk, but your best option is to alternate between authors. Spread the reading love.

If you like a book, tell the author and tell your friends.

Authors write novels because they hope people will enjoy reading them and fall in love with their characters. Telling an author you enjoyed her novel lets her know she’s achieved her goal, and everyone likes knowing when they’ve done a good job. And don’t forget to tell your friends about the wonderful story they have to experience for themselves. After all, it’s what you’d want your friends to do for you.

These are the basic rules for reading, but it’s possible I’ve forgotten a few. If you’ve got any more, let me know!
