GUEST POST: Callisto Carvanis: And A Legacy Was Born by Shakuita Johnson (@sljay1184)

sj001-personallogo-eeHello everyone! I’ll start off with a bit of background on myself. I’m almost 31 years old. I was in the Air Force for 8 years and I’ve only been out a little over a year. I’m currently pursuing a dual Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Mental Health Counseling. I want to work with children in some capacity. I’m an avid reader and series watcher. Most of what I read, write, and watch is supernatural/paranormal based.

I started writing poems when I was still in Middle School. I took a creative writing class senior year of high school and loved it. I wrote my first short stories there, but still it would take me almost nine and ten years before I even attempted to write anything longer, least of all a book. I started to write my first book Sept 2012 after getting off the phone with my best friend and hearing how he wanted the evil queen to win in Snow White and the Huntsman, so I had a thought. I thought why not write him an entire book where there were only villains. Kind of write their side of the story…but it turned into so much more. I’ve written five books in that series, with two more (fingers crossed) to go, and possibly four books in the spin off series.

Now, as to why I’m here. I’m going to talk a bit about my paranormal journey. I fell in love from a young age with the horror/supernatural/paranormal world. From watching Stephan King movies, reading Anne Rice, Christopher Pike, and RL Stine, I knew this was a subject I would have in my life until the day I died. If it was my turn to pick a movie when hanging with friends or the rare times we’d go to rent a movie from Blockbuster (yes, how many remember these!?) or for something I wanted to read, nine times out of ten, it was either a scary movie, a vampire book, or a supernatural TV show. I enjoyed watching and reading the Goosebumps and Fear Street series from RL Stine, and wish I still had the books. Now you can catch me watching every scary/paranormal/supernatural movie, regardless of if it’s good or not lol. I’d still rather read about vampires, witches, and shape shifters than regular human beings any day although a few select few can sway me: murder, suspense, dark, but my first love will always be poems and things that go bump in the night.

So, when I did write my first book, Dark Indiscretions, it would come as no surprise that it was paranormal based. I took everything I knew/know about the paranormal, and molded it until I came up with my own unique brand of crazy, and I’ve been running with it ever since. I know some authors stop reading when they are writing a story, but not me. I’d go crazy if I couldn’t read whenever I wanted. For me, it’s easy to separate my story world from those of other authors. Maybe it’s because I already see my world so clearly and I can easily get lost in theirs for the time I’m reading and then switch back to my own since I spend more time in my make-believe world. I’ve always been a day dreamer, and to me that’s what writing is. Day dreaming, putting it on paper, and sharing it with the world.

My current day dream is Callisto Carvanis: And A Legacy Was Born. She is the first book in my Dark Indiscretions Chronicles series, which is the spin off for my Dark Indiscretions Series. I introduced Callisto in Dark Indiscretions: A Prequel, and at the time I didn’t know how important she would be. I just knew I loved her and needed more of her. But I couldn’t do her justice, so I had to give her her own story and in doing so, I found how just how connected she was in my paranormal journey.

My plan is to release her this year. I’m halfway done writing her, and hope to finish the other half by mid-Oct and then give her a polish before sending her off to my editor. Here’s a little peek at the crazy that she is. Thank you for taking the time to read my little ramblings and I hope to see you as a new fan or fellow reader/writer.
