Hot vampires are everywhere and Dylan is finding it hard to control herself – especially since she is the only Mortal One. Her life was normal up until a few days ago. Then she met Nico on the streets of Florence and her world will never be the same again. Nico is sexy, Italian, and immortal – three features that she has never found more alluring in a man. She must now learn how to balance an exhilarating love affair and vampire politics at their worst. There’s also a Parisian vampire that wants to claim her and she has to receive a mark in order to keep her safe from the troubles that exist.
I had seen this one around at some point, so when I was asked if I wanted to review it, of course I said yes. Why? Vampires!
Dylan is a vampire fanatic, and she’s out to prove that they exist, even though no one else believes her, and she has no reason to believe that it is so either. With a small inheritance in hand, she goes to a vampire symposium in Romania, or I should say Transylvania-of course. She manages to get briefly involved with a fake vampire cult, and escapes to Paris in order to just vacation. But the damage had been done. She is now on the vampires radar, as a problem that needs to be handled. She leaves Paris behind because she thinks she might have a stalker, and settles down in Florence, Italy, for the rest of her time off. Then things get really interesting.
Dylan is approached by a very handsome man named Nico, that reveals himself as a vampire. I won’t ruin it for the readers, but that scene could have easily been the end of the book. The two end up hitting it off, and a romance blossoms. Now that she is aware that vampires exist, she can no longer go back to life as she knows it-as in she won’t be allowed to. An extreme case of be careful what you wish for!
In the beginning of this, I was a little put off with the extremely short scenes. All of a sudden you would be hours past what you were just reading, and have no idea that the scene was over, and you need to move on. It must have gotten better though, because once I got pulled into the story, I couldn’t put it down, and I no longer paid attention to the abrupt scene changes. To be fair to the author, I was reading an advance reader copy, and maybe the scene breaks just weren’t there. When I say that I couldn’t put it down-that is literally what I meant. I started it one afternoon and was finished by the middle of the night that same day-well it was a new day, but you know what I mean.
I enjoyed the romance between Dylan and Nico. It was interesting that the authors vision of vampires included the problems a vampire and a human partner would have in order to have sex. That’s something that is usually not addressed in most vampire books. I know it’s about vampires, but this added some sense of realism then the typical vampire read usually has. Of course there is more interesting world building included in this book as well, Dylan as a character at times put herself in bad situations. She has a stalker in Paris when she walks alone at night, so she starts walking alone at night in Florence. Really? I wanted to yell at my Kindle. But since it advanced the story, I just kept reading, and ultimately enjoyed the read a lot. Nico and all the other male vampires were extremely handsome, and the one female, was beautiful. I enjoyed Nico as a character, he was sweet in how much he actually cared about a human(other then just a meal) for probably the first time since he changed. I also liked that he wasn’t the leader of the vampires, instead he was just one of the vampires of the group in Rome.
I do have another small problem with this book. It involves the ending although I am not sure if I would call it a real ending. The book just sort of ended in the middle of a scene. I didn’t like this, but since I enjoyed the rest of the story so much, I do want to see what else is in store for Dylan, Nico and the rest of the vampires that were introduced, including the powerful villain that is also a character in this book. The villain is a vampire, but it would seem he is something else as well. Something we have yet to find out. So yes, I will be reading the next one!
This is an adult read, and I recommend it to paranormal romance fans, especially ones that love reading about hot vampires!
