REVIEW by Eryn: Never by Shay Lynam (@shay_lynam , @rjbags19)

NEVERWynn Harper spends her days trying to blend into the background. This isn’t very easy, especially being the great granddaughter of the late Wendy Darling. Wynn used to love Great Gran’s stories about her adventures in Neverland with Peter Pan and his lost boys, but that’s all they were. Just stories, right? That’s what Wynn keeps telling herself.

But then she meets Peter, the beautiful boy with a voice to match, and when he whisks her off to Neverland, Wynn knows this is no fairy tale. The lost boys are a group of rebellious ex-pirates, young Hook has a soft side, and Peter Pan isn’t as innocent as you might think.

Shay delivers a spellbinding and magical work in Never. The great-grand daughter of Wendy Maura Angela Darling, Wyndy “Wynn” Harper, is mourning the loss of her eccentric familial matriarch. Prior to her death, Wendy Darling’s ravings of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, the Lost Boys, and Neverland caused her great-grand daughter agony from her peers who used these delusions to bully and batter Wynn. Engulfed in grief, Wynn’s best friend Marty entices her to move past her grief, which is when into her life comes a startlingly handsome young man named Peter. Peter, of course, is THE Peter Pan immortalized in the works of J.M. Barrie. The stories of Wynn’s Great Gran imagination soon change from imagination to reality in the blink of an eye, with Wynn experiencing them first hand, and finding out the truth about Wendy’s past, and, the immortal lives of the inhabitants of Neverland.

Shay’s Never was engaging from the start. With the ease of read and a beautifully flowing story line, this really was a piece I did not want to put down until the tale was told in full! I have always been exceptionally fond of Barrie’s original tale of Peter Pan and was rather skeptical of the ability of a writer to fully captivate a reader with a “sequel” to this legendary work. Shay did not disappoint me in the least, and, this will be a story that I will re-read again, not for the content, but for the feelings invoked. In all things, my preference is simple but elegant, and that is exactly what Shay’s Never offers a reader.
