REVIEW by Lorna: Play (Stage Dive #2) by Kylie Scott (@KylieScottbooks, @Mollykatie112)

PlayKylie Scott returns with the highly anticipated follow-up to international bestseller Lick.

Mal Ericson, drummer for the world famous rock band Stage Dive, needs to clean up his image fast—at least for a little while. Having a good girl on his arm should do the job just fine. Mal doesn’t plan on this temporary fix becoming permanent, but he didn’t count on finding the one right girl.

Anne Rollins never thought she’d ever meet the rock god who plastered her teenage bedroom walls—especially not under these circumstances. Anne has money problems. Big ones. But being paid to play the pretend girlfriend to a wild life-of-the-party drummer couldn’t end well. No matter how hot he is. Or could it?

Lick, the first book in this series, was a really good rock star romance. This one, Play, has been out awhile and I finally was able to find some time to read it. I thought it was worth the wait. At the end of my review of Lick, I mentioned that I hoped the next book would be about Mal, and I was right!

Anne works at a bookstore and comes home to her apartment one night to find that her roommate has moved, still owing her quite a bit of money. She lives next door to a friend who’s boyfriend’s sister(Evelyn) is married to the leader of the group Stage Dive, David. Because of this, she gets invited to a party at Evelyn’s house. While there, she meets commitment phobe, Mal, the drummer for Stage Dive. The relationship starts out as roommates due to him overhearing that her roommate moved out leaving her high and dry. Of course things move on to a lot more from there. And actually Mal had an ulterior motive of his own.

What I liked about this book:
I liked the characters of Anne and Mal. The were fully realized by the author and Mal in particular stands out as a man with problems he doesn’t want to talk about. He spends a lot of his time using humor to disguise an underlying heartbreak. Anne is characterized as a big fan of the group, but since she met him through friends, she’s not considered a groupie. She is a giver and people in her life have used her, in particular her best friend Reece. Reece is a womanizer, but that doesn’t stop Anne from wanting him for her her own. She’s pretty much waiting for him to wake up and want her. He sure doesn’t count on Mal to enter Anne’s life. Things do get interesting! I should say it’s not really a love triangle.

As always, I liked that it was a rock star romance. This premise is one of my favorite non-paranormal reads. So this goes into the like column for me..

I also liked getting to catch up with the characters from the previous book, especially David and his wife Evelyn, the main characters from Lick.

What I didn’t like about this book:
This would probably be considered erotica-at least in some portions of the book. I liked the book well enough that even though that’s not my favorite genre to read, it didn’t really bother me.

Who would I recommend this book to?
Adults that like rock star romances with erotic scenes.

I found this book to be well written, with good characters and a good romance. I have already pre-ordered the next book, Lead, that comes out soon.
