REVIEW by Lorna: Circle of Death (Damask Circle #2) by Keri Arthur – RELEASED TODAY! (@kezarthur, @Mollykatie112)

PASSION REBORN

In one vicious night, Kirby Brown’s world is torn apart. Her best friend is dead, killed by a madman who is now after Kirby, and she has no idea why. When the police prove incapable of protecting Kirby, she has no choice but to trust a mysterious stranger. And while she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him, she fears the strange abilities he wields.

An investigator for the Damask Circle, Doyle Fitzgerald, has come to Melbourne, Australia, to hunt down a killer. What he doesn’t expect to find is a cadre of witches capable of controlling the elements, a sorceress determined to take that power for herself, and a broken woman who is more than she seems. Doyle is certain that the reason behind the bloodshed lies in Kirby’s past—a past she has no wish to remember. Because Doyle isn’t the only one with magic in his soul: Kirby’s special gifts have the strength to destroy the world.

Circle of Death

This is the second book in this paranormal romance series about a group that polices the supernatural world. The Damask Circle consists of all kinds of creatures including witches, vampires and shifters. This time around the story concerns Kirby, a witch with a small degree of magic(or so she thinks) and Doyle, a panther shifter who Kirby meets after the horrific death of her best friend and roommate, Helen. Not going to lie, this was a pretty gory scene and Kirby is the one that finds the body or actually maybe I should say body parts. Enough said.

What I liked about this book:
The premise of the story. A murderer is using dark magic to kill women that were all former residents of the orphan home that Kirby and Helen lived in as children. One of the witches of the Damask Circle has come up with a list(magically) of women that are targeted. This brings Doyle and some other members of his group( a witch and a vampire) to Australia to search for the women on the list. They haven’t been there long when Helen’s death happens and the story ramps up from there.

The characters, especially the character of Doyle. He is an investigator for the Damask Circle and is smart, passionate, a workaholic, and ultimately a lonely guy who doesn’t think he will ever meet his mate. Kirby is a former orphan, and is heartbroken at the loss of her friend. She is also someone that has never learned to trust and has run away from life for as long as she can remember. The reasons for this are also explored in this story and ultimately have a lot to do with why the deaths are occurring.

The magic that is involved in the story was pretty intriguing. The power to control lightening and wind was pretty different from other books of this type(that I have read anyway) and some other pretty interesting magical, ghostly phenomenon are involved too. The black magic was just plain scary at times.

I really liked that it was a continuation of the Damask Circle series. I think these books are all very well written and tell an engaging, supernatural and romantic story. This is the same Circle that is featured in the Nikki and Michael series that I read previously (and reviewed)and really enjoyed. Because the Circle has so many different types of supernatural characters, each book features different types of magical beings, and that is true for both series.

What didn’t I like about this book?
I honestly can’t think of much. It had a good romance, a good paranormal mystery, lots of action, some twists and turns along the way and it kept me reading without being bored at all.. One minor thing would be Kirby being the typical damsel in distress at one point-she is told to stay inside to be safe and of course she leaves. I wanted to shake her! But as I said, that was minor and really actually ended up moving the story along.

Who would I recommend this book to?
Any adult that likes a good paranormal romance and mystery would most likely enjoy it.

It should be noted that this is a re-release. I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest and fair review.
