Six years after a shocking tragedy left her emotionally and physically scarred, Ember Jones lives a life of quiet isolation in Barcelona. Determined to keep her troubled past a secret, she keeps her head down and her heart locked up tight. Until the day a beautiful, mysterious stranger walks into her life, and her carefully controlled world is shattered forever.
Christian McLoughlin is unlike anyone Ember has ever met. Wealthy, cultured, and utterly charismatic, he also has dark secrets of his own. They succumb to the undeniable pull between them and embark on a passionate affair, but things turn explosive when the truth about Christian and the reason he came to Barcelona is exposed. As their dark pasts collide, the two unlikely lovers find themselves caught in a web of danger and deceit that neither of them might survive.
The Edge of Darkness, where hunter becomes hunted, no one can be trusted, and love is the most dangerous game of them all.
This series just keeps getting better and better and I am rapidly becoming one of this author’s biggest fans. I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Crazy Caesar is still on his quest to take over the world. Christian (the brother of the head of the Ikati group in England) has moved temporarily to Spain in search of Caesar and his followers. He meets Ember at the rare bookstore she runs. She is human. It is extremely illegal in the Ikati society for humans and Ikati to fall in love. Christian can’t help himself and totally falls in love with Ember and she with him. Obstacle? So many, but the main one is that she isn’t aware he isn’t human and he is on a mission that could get him killed.
Since this is the fourth book in the series, I need to explain a bit, I think. The Ikati is a group of panther shifters. But they are so much more then that. They are a secret society with enclaves all over the world and have existed since before man inhabited the earth. They have special powers, are stronger then humans, their senses are sharper and enhanced and some can even turn into vapor. They are also being hunted and were, even before Caesar started his campaign. Because of Caesar, humans are now aware of the Ikaeti.
If you are a paranormal romance reader and haven’t started reading these books yet then I have to say you are definitely missing out. With each book, the author goes deeper and deeper into the Ikati realm. The world of the Ikati is fascinating and is right up there in the top three of the most interesting paranormal worlds that I have read up to this point. Since I read mainly paranormal books these days, that is saying a lot.
I loved the characters of Ember and Christian. They are just so real and flawed by life experiences. The author also introduced the character of Asher, Ember’s gay best friend. He was a wonderful character and I really would like to see more of him in another book. Actually, I really would like another book featuring all these characters. I think a whole book could be written about Ember acclimating to the Ikati world. If not, I still would like to hear about it in some way.
This book is a romance but it also is a nonstop action, adventure story as is this entire series. I have loved every book in this series and can’t wait for the next one. I could see this series going on indefinitely. Not sure how many books there are going to be, but I am sure that as long as the author writes this series, I will be reading them.
5 very well earned stars!
