Danger signs rise off Jase Kayrs like steam—the scars, the secrets, the strength. He’s got a mission, and he’s not interested in much outside of it. Except Brenna Dunne.
Brenna was an ass-kicking, name-taking witch—before the poison that’s killing her sapped her powers too. She knows there’s more to Jase than a handsome face and an ugly history. But there’s no time to find out what. Taking him as her mate might save her life. But once she unleashes the force of his desire, there will be no turning back…
Ready or not, here they come…
I read the first two books of the Dark Protector series but have not read any of the others since then. It wasn’t hard to catch up with the characters at all-at least it wasn’t for me although it had jumped about twenty years from the start of the books until this book.
These books tell the story of a family of vampire brothers and their mates. The Kayrs brothers are one of the most powerful groups in the paranormal world. The youngest brother, Jase, was freed five years ago after enduring years of torture at the hands of demons. He is quite damaged due to this, not only in scars but psychologically. Brenna is a witch who is also damaged due to being slowly poisoned by a substance that was forced on her ten years before. She is dying but can possibly be saved if she mates with a vampire. Jase offers himself up to save her-strictly business. Believe that? Me either!
The paranormal world has been at war for years and the Kayrs family which includes the king, is right in the middle of it. Brenna is part of a prophecy which is due to her being the eighth daughter of a seventh daughter-which is unheard of. It is all supposed to come to a head in the next few days. All kinds of groups are trying to kill her or mate her. So things get pretty crazy pretty quickly with lots of fighting, action scenes and even kidnapping.
It is really hard to review this book without telling so much background but I promise you, so much more happens or is touched on in this book. Way more then what I have mentioned. Yes their world is at war but they still find time to fall in love and to mate. Of course. Because at its core this is a romance and a very good one at that. The world the author has created, depicts vampires as almost human in their personalities even though they are born vampire. And of course witches act pretty human too. There are monsters in this book however, and that is where most of the problems arise from.
All the characters are back for this book and that’s always a good thing when you can catch up with the ones you loved from previous books. Janie is still wanted by different factions and is still visiting Zane in her dreams-only now she is all grown up. We actually get to see Zane in a scene that doesn’t involve a dream this time. I would definitely love to read a book about Zane and Janie. Was that a big enough hint to the author? Hope so!
Okay so we have got pretty much non-stop action, interspersed with mating, and catch up time for most of the characters. A good all round book Ms. Zanetti!
I enjoyed it and rated it 4.25 stars.
