REVIEW by Dolly: Biting Cold (Chicagoland Vampires #6) by Chloe Neill (@chloeneill , @fidget78 )
Turned into a vampire against her will, twenty-eight-year-old Merit found her way into the dark circle of Chicago’s vampire underground, where she learned there was more to supernaturals than met the eye—and more supernaturals than the public ever imagined. And not all the secrets she learned were for sharing—among humans or inhumans. Now Merit is on the hunt, charging across the stark American Midwest, tailing a rogue supernatural intent on stealing an ancient artifact that could unleash catastrophic evil on the world. But Merit is also the prey. An enemy of Chicagoland is hunting her, and he’ll stop at nothing to get the book for himself. No mercy allowed.
I’ve been reading this series from the very beginning and anyone who has, knows all the traumatic events that the readers and Merit have been through. I’ve looking forward to Biting Cold since Hard Bitten. Chicagoland Vampires fans will know what I mean by that and that’s all I can say without huge spoilers.
Ms Neill has got to be one of the ballsiest authors I have come across. Again, can’t go into detail due to spoilers but she took a huge risk in a previous book that had the Internet users gasping for breath. Anywhose, Biting Cold picks up right where Drink Deep left off. The novel started slowly for me. It took me a few chapters to really get into the story and what exactly was going on. Merit and Ethan are intent on finding and stopping the now evil, Mallory. Mallory was/is Merit’s best friend who seems to have been brought over to the dark side by her magic.
I was a bit disappointed in the seemly STILL back and forth on Ethan’s part but hung in there for the ride and to see if things would finally turn Merit’s way. Sometimes, I just wanted to smack the two of them. Ethan for waffling and Merit for putting up with it. Can you tell by my review that I was still invested in the storyline? It didn’t feel like it at the time but looking back, I was right there with Merit, Ethan and Mallory.
Not only do Merit and Ethan have to deal with Mallory and the shadowy someone else, Cadogan House is going through some changes of it’s own. Will the Council kick the House out? What will happen to them then? See, still a lot of questions and no answers coming your way until the next installment.
I was very torn about how to rate Biting Cold. I liked it. It was a necessary novel to the continuation of the series but I’m still torn. If I hadn’t loved the first three installments, I would have been bouncing my head off the wall. So, overall, I was a bit frustrated. But, that may be what Ms Nell wants at this point.
Not my favorite in the series but overall very well written. (I still want to smack Ethan).
My rating: 4 Stars (barely)
