REVIEW by Ginny: Magic the Gathering Volume 1 by Matt Forbeck – Release Date June 27th 2012 (@mforbeck , @puretextuality)
Get ready, Magic: The Gathering fans, there’s a new Planeswalker in town!
In search of greater magical knowledge and on the hunt for the people who destroyed his town, Dack Fayden is the greatest thief in the Multiverse.
When he gets his hands on his latest prize, though, he has no idea where it will lead him – or to who!
Ok… so this one I would’ve gotten even if it was only two pages. See, beyond being a huge comic nerd I’m a huge Magic Geek. The only thing that rivals the legendary Lurcock comic collection is the Lurcock magic card holdings.
In this comic we start with a main character who is a thief. A thief who is in the middle of a heist that is going poorly. With witty comments regarding plans.
And then he walks. ACROSS FREAKING PLAINS.
After the walking of plains, he… well runs into more troubles. Then when impending troubles are over, at least temporarily, he discovers that his booty is actually a clue to a mystery that’s been haunting him. I know, this should be implausible, but he just stole this thing from a cult with a winged leader and then plains walked. Reality has already been suspended ergo mysterious clues are not as random as they might have been in… oh I don’t know… a gritty detective comic.
The art is fantastic. (No faces freaked me out) The story was awesome (re: plains walking thief). And I’m getting the urge to buy both the comic and new Magic cards.
Hopefully owning the Magic game on Steam will take that edge off.
